 BACCARAT

How to Play Baccarat

Pronounced Bah Car Rah, this is an easy game to learn and has a very low house edge, meaning that you have a high chance of winning.

There are several versions of the game, the recommended sites offer a wide variety, but we tend to play European Baccarat.

The object of Baccarat is to predict if the Player, or the Banker, will be dealt a hand with a point value closest to, but not exceeding  9. All Face Cards, and Tens count as zero, Aces count as One, and all other cards carry the value stated on the card.

The Player and the Banker are each dealt a two-card hand. If the cards in a hand totaly 9, it is called a 'Natural' and cannot lose. A total of  8 is the second-best hand. If both the Player and the Banker are dealt identical hands, it is a 'Tie' and niether hand wins.

The Player can bet on who is going to win. Player, Banker, or Tie. Banker bets carry the lowest house edge of around 1.35%. Player and Banker bets pay out at Evens, a Tie pays out at 9 to 1.

One thing to note is how card totals are added up. If the cards in a hand total more than ten points, you need to subtract ten to get the Baccarat value.

 So for example, 7 + 7 + 14, which counts as 4 in Baccarat.

If the first two cards only add up to a certain number, a third card will be drawn.

Player's third-card-rule

  • If either the player or the bank have a total of 8 or 9 on the first two cards no further cards are drawn. The resulting hand is called a natural and the hand is over.
  • If the player's total is less than or equal to 5 the player's hand draws a third card.
  • If the player does not draw a third card, then the bank's hand stands on 6 or more and takes a third card on a total of 5 or less. If the player does take a third card then the Bank's third-card-rule below will determine if the bank takes a third card.

Bank's third-card-rule

  • If the bank's total is 2 or less then bank draws a card, regardless of what the players third card is.
  • If the banks total is 3 then the bank draws a third card unless the players third card was an 8.
  • If the banks total is 4 then the bank draws a third card unless the players third card was a 0, 1, 8, or 9.
  • If the banks total is 5 then the bank draws a third card if the players third card was 4, 5, 6, or 7.
  • If the banks total is 6 then the bank draws a third card if the players third card was a 6 or 7.
  • If the banks total is 7 then the bank stands.

 Baccarat system -

Here's a system I use for playing Baccarat. Remember, no system is guarenteed to beat a casino - it's for fun only, but it does give you an edge. There is nothing new about this betting strategy, it's called the 'Labouchere' system, and has been around for years.  It works particuarly well with the low house edge on Baccaart.

Once you are set up, with the table on screen, get a pen and paper.

Write down the numbers 1,2,3,4,5 on your piece of paper.

Add up the outside numbers of the sequence. 1 + 5 =6

Bet £6 on the 'Player' section of the tabel.

If you win the hand, cross out the outside numbers of the sequence. You are left with 2,3,4

 Add up the remaining outside numbers. 2 + 4 = 6

Bet £6 on the 'Player' section.

If you win, cross out the outside numbers, you are left with '3'

 Bet £3 on 'Player'

If you lose at any point in the sequence, write the amount you have just bet with onto the end of the sequence. So if your first bet was a loser, you would add the number 6 to the end. You then bet again using the sum of the outside numbers, in this case 1+6=7. Bet £7 on 'Player'.

It takes a bit of practice, but the bits to remember are -

Always bet using the sum of the outside numbers.

Cross out the outside numbers if you win.

Add the amount just lost to the end of the sequence if you lose.

Baccarat at William Hill -

A highly recommended site to play at, due to its' excellent graphics, realistic play, and a useful scorecard that allows you to keep track of previous hands dealt. This is essential if you are following a progressive stakes system. There is also a stakes limit that goes from £1 all the way up to a £5000 maximum.

You can chose from single, or multi-player tables, we would strongly recommend that any beginner starts on singles.

Live Dealer Baccarat at Bet365 -

A good way to play Baccarat is through the live Dealer option at Bet365, where you can see via a webcam, someone actually working at your table, with no extra cost to you. It's a nice touch, but if that's not for you, then they do of course offer the normal, automated game. Bet365's Baccarat payout is an excellent 97.49%, graphics are generally good, and a useful tutorial session is available should you need it.

Don't forget that Bet365 offer a comp. points system, where every 100 points played earns you £1 in real money.
